What is Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation?

TMS has been cleared by the FDA for "treatment of Major Depressive Disorder in adult patients who have failed to receive satisfactory improvement from prior antidepressant medication in the current episode". At BHS, the MagVita TMS Therapy® system, which is a complete system for effectively treating depression, is used. The MagVita TMS Therapy®, based on rTMS (repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation), allows psychiatrists to treat a large number of patients not responding to medications or who cannot tolerate side effects such as weight gain and sleep disorder. The MagVita TMS Therapy treatment protocol consists of repeated cycles of rTMS followed by rest periods. TMS treatments require prior consultation with a doctor and may require approval from your insurance company.

A full MagVita TMS Therapy consists of:

  • An initial session which includes the determination of the patient’s individual stimulation level
  • 5 treatment sessions per week over a period of 6 weeks.
